Alright so my HP has 512 ram installed. It's got 2 256 sticks. It doesn't run games or anything so I'm gonna go for a gig when i upgrade. For about the same price i could get 2 512's to have a gig dual channel, or one gig stick to replace one of the 256's with.

So the simple question is, whats better, 1gig in dual channel or 1.2 gigs not dual channel?

If you're looking into playing games, look into a new video card. I have only 512MB in one of my rigs and play Halo, NFS Carbon, NFSU Most Wanted, Nascar racing games, ect... and it's paired with a cheap VisionTek ATI Radeon 9200SE 128MB Video card. It plays all games flawlessly. so, your 512MB should be fine paired up with the right video card. But, if you're going to get the RAM, get the 512MB x 2 because, the 256MB will most likely slow down the speed of the single 1GB stick. I have another system with a 512MB PC3200 stick and a 256MB PC2100 stick paired with an AMD Athlon XP 2400+ and another VisionTek 9200SE 128MB Video card, and it runs a LOT slower than my AMD 2600+, 512MB, 128MB Video. (Sad to say but that computer runs just as fast as my current computer, Intel Core 2 DUO E6300, 2GB RAM, 256MB Video :p)
