difference between PC2100 and 2700

I want to buy 512 memory for gateway laptop. Gateway says PC2100 but when I tried PC2700 DDR 333, it worked fine. Is the 2700 defaulting to the lower 2100?

Yep, it's just running at a lower speed. DDR and DDR2 ram can do this in almost all motherboards without a problem.
