I've noticed the 8800 series dropping slowly but stedily on newegg.com

It just depends on what you're looking for, but general speaking, they tend to drop at steady rate. And whenever stores have sales.

I think hard drives are extremely cheap now days. I mean you can pick up a 400gig on new egg for just over $100.

I remember when 80gigs were that much.
