unless you go with an amd s939 (opty 165 is prolly best), you will have to upgrade your ram in addition to your mobo, cpu and video card. in which case 400 bucks aint gonna cut it. the opteron can use your ddr ram. i think there is one asrock board that uses ddr for a c2d, but the mobo, cpu and card will add up quite a bit more than 400.00. plus, you just dont want to use ddr ram with a core 2 duo.
i dont think you will be able to upgrade to c2d for 400 bucks, sorry.
using the opty (its dual core also and a very good cpu), you can get a mobo, cpu, pci-e video card and probably a decent psu for very close to that amount. you may not need a psu if the 12v amperage is sufficient to run a pci-e video card.
if that strikes your fancy lemme know and i will post some newegg links.
link me up, if nothing else it will give me stuff to look over and weigh benefits n what not, with what my overall goal is. so hey lets see what we got!

For $400, you could do alot to your current PC. Upgrade the processor, hard drive, and video card

Intel Pentium 4 3.0E 3.0Ghz Socket 478 RoHS Version Processor $82 FREE SHIPPING

Seagate SV35 Series ST3250824SV 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM $80 $6 SHIPPING

SAPPHIRE 100148ADVL Radeon X1600PRO 256MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail $75 $6 SHIPPING

I wouldn't recommend any more memory; You could install another 512MB if you wish, but anything after 2GB is pointless.

kudos tall dude for the effort, but is the p4 worth a 400 dollar upgrade?
i say no way. no offense though, that is a good setup for the money. i vote dual core, tho:

amd opteron 165 154.00 free shippin:

asus a8n5x (w/nf4 chipset) like 77.00 including shippin
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813131569

xfx 7900gs like 185. with shippin (also has a 30.00 MIR, lol wouldn't bet on it tho)

like 415.00 but with no psu.
list the specs of yours and compare them with what that vid card needs. it may be okay, you may need to buy a new one. you can get a plenty decent psu for around 50.00

see i was thinkin bout doing maybe a new video card, faster processor and maybe dual channel ram. instead of all the random sticks of crap ive accumulated. and as much as i would love to just hit dual core, its just not gonna happen unless i can come up with more money, besides, it would be better to just save up and build a complete dual core comp, and i can use this one as my second in command once i get that one organized. sound good? oh! and!!!... i dont know where i was going with that... hmmm THX EVERYONE!!!
