problem pc, help needed

ok guys, i have been set the task of fixing a friends pc, and im hoping you can help me.
Its running xp home edition, and has been fine (if not a little slow, it is quite old lol) for many years. the other day, it was in the middle of defragging, and their brother turned off the pc during the defrag. now when turned on, all you can get is the desktop background, no taskbar, no icons, no nothing. task manager works, but that's about it. i tried booting up in safe mode, and it is the same old story.

i thought that perhaps the hdd had a virus, or that the hdd was damaged, but when i plugged it into my pc, i found it had no viruses, and partition magic didn't say the hdd was bad or anything.

so i'm a bit stumped


any ideas guys??

run a windows repair. This is why enver to run defrag using XPs software. So so many problems i have seen with this

thanks, but can i use my xp pro cd to repair the xp home os?
