help with new sata drive.

i picked up a new sata drive todya but im not sure how to make it work. i've installed it and connected it and it recognizes it in the bios and in device manager but not in my computer. whats up? any help appreciated.

You need to format it. Go into disk manager in windows.

alright thanks that helped but its a 250 gb drive. i can only format 232.88 of it. then next to it it says 9 mb unallocacted. whats up with that?

the 9mb is where the partition table is stored telling your computer that this is how the hard drive is set up.

232.88 is what you get out of 250 gig drives and 69.4 gigs is what you get out of a 74 gig drive. its what happens when you say 1 meg equals 1024kb. 1 meg isnt a true 1000kb so eventually the kb becomes more then the megs its supposed to represent. but manufacturers dont change the label to represent the real number.
