USB problems

I have a Aptiva E46 266 w/256 ram. It is about 8 years old and have had no problems with it until now. When the warranty ran out I put Win 2000 on it. The problem is the 2 USB ports in the back stopped working a week ago and I have formatted the hard drive and put Win 2000 back on but still no USB. The only way I can get it to work is uninstall the USB drivers reboot then it will work but if I turn the computer off then on again the USBs won't work. Any suggestions??? I have been reading in this forum and read some things about the service packs. Would they help me???

I downloaded and installed Service Packs 1 - 4 and it didn't help my problem with the USB port. Any other suggestions????
