I have a HP pavilion 1640a processor.

When we put it “sleep mode” either by pressing the sleep button on the top of the keyboard, or selecting “START/TURN OFF COMPUTER/STANDBY”, the computer screen switches to a blue screen with words “preparing to standby”.

It remains in this frozen state, with no other action able to be performed, and the only thing we can do is manually turn the power off and reboot.

If the computer has been idle for 15 minutes or so, it also enters this frozen state with same blue screen “preparing to standby”.

How can we over come this to ensure the sleep or standby mode is properly operable?

Just quit using sleep and hybernate. It causes a lot of problems and a lot of computers.
