USB Header Confusion

Ok, I ordered an internal USb card reader. On the card reader there is a 9 pin USB header that I would normally connect to the board. I can't do that because its an el cheapo board and doesn't have USB headers. So I found a USB PCI card with a 5 pin USB header on it. I can't get the 5 pin to work with the 9 pin. When I plug it in as best I can, the drivers appear, but when I pop a card in it it is not seen.
In other words, I'll see drives A through I but when I pop a card in there, I double click on any drive it says there isn't a disk in there.



I checked ebay and I can't find any sort of cable that will allow me to go from the USB port to the USB header.
 
one you are treading on very thin ice. if you accidentally reverse the + and - or grnd and vcc on usb, you will ruin your mainboard.

what is the model of your mainboard
 
It is an el cheapo PC Chips board - it doesn't have USB headers onit, hence I am using the pictured PCI card.

treading on this ice is my middle name.

oh first do you have xp and sp2 ? sp2 is very important for usb.

so you bought a PCI USB card

now this is where i get confused, there are headers on the card ?
are there also the "A' type sockets for an A,B typr usb cable ?
if there are headers on the card , why do you need headers
what device are you connecting. ?

OK, let's start over.
Yes, I have SP2. This is not a Windows issue.

This is the USB card I installed.
I tried to pot some arrows to the USB headers with four pins, but GIMP is apeice of crap.
YOu can see in the center of the picture, a four pin USB header, with a plug directly above it.


This is the memory card reader. Internal 3.5 inch.


this is the cable it came with. Both ends are the same.


Here is a picture of the read of the memory card reader.
Note the 9-pin connector


this is what I tried connecting to the card reader, a USB cable, with a four pin connector. Didn't work.

I think when he is saying 9 pin he means two rows of 9 pins, like 9 pin firewire. becuse the 4 pin, as you stated is something like
pin 1 , 2
3, 4
5 , 6
7, 8
9 , 10

1 and 2 are usually VCC
3 and 4 are + or _
5 and 6 are - or +
7 and 8 are gnd
9 is usually missing 10 is a key so that the connector can only go on one way

so if he had a 4 pin header from the card reader it should have worked unless he got it upside down, which if that happened blew out the card reader / damaged the card
