Home printer set up

I wasnt sure if i should post this here or not, but this is probably a really simple answer but i want to connect to my family's printer to my computer. I was told i could connect them through my router so i've tryed that but it doesnt work. Do i have to connect the pc's directly? My pc is running XP pro and my family's is XP Home, will that make a problem? Sorry for a such a simple post, but i'm kind of a newb.

when you tried to print, is your family pc turned on?
if not, try print a page with both pc on?

home and pro will work for sharing a printer. on the family computer you need to share out the printer for your computer to see it, it also helps if you have them in a common workgroup as well. once you share the printer tho you can go to you computer and click add printer and then select the options for searching the network for one.

also anytime you want to print anything your family pc has to be turned on other wise the print job wont go through.
